WHAT THEY DO

Sheet Metal Workers fabricate and install ducts used in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. In addition, they fabricate and install other products such as metal roof decks, architectural sheet metal products, pain ovens, spray booths, dust collecting systems, and food service equipment. The work is laid out on metal sheets from blueprints, formed, fabricated and installed on the job site.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Sheet Metal Workers are unique due to the fact that they do a great deal of shop fabrication compared to the other construction trades. The products to be installed begin from a flat sheet of metal. The sheet metal worker develops the patterns from shop drawings. After the components are fabricated, they are delivered to the job site for installation.

INTEREST AND TEMPERMENT

People interested in becoming sheet metal workers must have the ability to follow instructions. The understanding of blueprints and the ability to work to close tolerances are necessary. They must also enjoy working with their hands and have the ability to think for themselves without constant supervision and have the physical abilities to perform the work of the trade.

WHAT THEY DO

Painters prepare surfaces of building and other structures and then apply paint by the means of brushes, rollers or sprayers. They work with varnish, enamels, lacquer, and other materials. They may also paint interior rooms or cover walls with paper, fabrics, vinyls, or other materials (paperhanger). They must be able to mix paints as well as do sandblasting and water blasting.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Painters work both indoors and out. Outside work is done in relatively mild weather. In some jobs, especially maintenance and redecoration of offices and buildings, the painter may be required to work evenings or weekends. Work is seasonal; however, new materials and methods trend to give more steady employment throughout the year. Physical and health hazards include the dangers of poisoning, falling from ladders and scaffolds, breathing paint fumes and dust. The work involves standing, bending, climbing and working with arms over the head much of the time.

INTEREST AND TEMPERMENT

Painters must have manual dexterity as well as steady nerves to work in high places. They should not be allergic to or bothered by paint fumes, toxic materials and spray dust. They should have a certain artistic sense in order to do a first-class job. Good eyesight and sense of color is especially important to properly mix paint to specific colors.

WHAT THEY DO

Ironworkers work as members of a group that raise and place fabricated structural steel members, such as beams, girders, plates, channels, angles, and columns and unite them permanently to form a completed structure or the framework of structure. Structural steel work is usually broken down into various phases, such as rigging and hoisting equipment, raising (erecting) steel, connecting, plumbing and aligning, bolting up and welding. Some ironworkers install iron grating, roof decking, metal siding, fencing, ornamental ironwork, window sash and curtail wall, reinforcing steel and post tensioning cables in concrete as well as setting pre-cast concrete. The rigger is an ironworker whose job is to move construction machinery and equipment and erection of pre-engineered metal buildings.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Most of the work is done outdoors. Most ironwork can be carried on year round except in instances of severe weather. Ironwork is an extremely hard and physically demanding trade. Because of the dangers of ironwork, it is important to be a team player who works well with fellow workers. Ironworkers risk injury from falls at great heights; they do a great deal of climbing, balancing and reaching.

INTEREST AND TEMPERMENT

Ironworkers cannot be afraid of working in high places. They must also have an acute awareness of the danger and be willing to assume responsibility for the safety of their fellow workers. An ironworker needs a good attitude and be physically capable of performing the work and must possess a good work ethic.

WHAT THEY DO

The work of Electrical Construction Workers (inside wireman) can be divided into broad categories such as new construction, remodeling, maintenance, and repair. While the jobs differ, the mental and physical skills acquired in a properly designed and administered training program prepare the electrical worker for this entire range of work. During a career as an electrical construction worker, a person will likely be involved in many different types of jobs presenting many new and different challenges, working with his or her hands as well as with their mind. Much of the work involves installation, assembling, testing, repairing, layout, and design of electrical wiring, fixtures, and apparatus used for power, light, heating, air conditioning, and many types of control systems. Many jobs now incorporate computer and fiber optics.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is done both indoors and outdoors in all temperatures, weather, and environmental conditions. The trade, at times, requires considerable physical effort for lifting, carrying materials, ladders, tools, and climbing ladders and scaffolds. Since much of the work is performed from ladders, scaffolds, or powered lifts, the electrical construction worker must be comfortable working a variety of heights. Most job functions require the use of hand and power tools.

INTEREST AND TEMPERMENT

The electrician will be lifting, carrying, and installing equipment and fixtures, working with tools, and connection wire and cables which are color coded. Due to the constant changes and innovations in the electrical industry, ongoing training and education is essential. Certain physical abilities are very important for successful completion of training and a career.
